Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are levied on intra-state supplies. IGST (Integrated GST) is levied on inter-state supplies and imports. CGST+SGST rates equal the IGST rate for the same tax slab.
How is GST calculated on invoices?
GST is calculated on the taxable value of goods/services. For example, if the taxable value is ₹1,000 and GST rate is 18%, the GST amount would be ₹180 (1,000 × 18%), making the total invoice amount ₹1,180.
Are there any goods/services exempt from GST?
Yes, some essential items like fresh vegetables, milk, bread, salt, education services, and healthcare services are exempt from GST. Some items like petroleum products are currently outside GST.
What is the GST composition scheme?
The composition scheme allows small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for some states) to pay GST at a fixed rate (1-6%) without input tax credits. They can’t collect GST from customers.
